Missouri Lifestyle Journalism Awards

The Seattle Times features sections received second place for "General Excellence" in the prestigious Missouri Lifestyle Journalism contest. This is the oldest and best-known feature writing and editing competition in American newspapering.

Best of the West

The Seattle Times won 3 first-place, 3 second-place and 5 third-place awards in 8 categories in this contest, which was developed to reward journalistic excellence and promote freedom of information.

Growth/Development reporting: 3rd place, "Did Development, Logging set Stage for Disaster?" by Lynda Mapes and Hal Bernton.

Explanatory reporting: 1st place, "Confronting Malaria" by Sandi Doughton and Kristi Heim. 3rd place, "Building the Dreamliner" by Dominic Gates.

Project reporting: 3rd place, "A Prayer for Gloria" by Jerry Brewer.

Investigative reporting: 2nd place, "Miracle Machines" by Mike Berens and Christine Willmsen.

Pictures of the Year Awards

The Seattle Times has won 5 awards in the P.O.Y. contest. Photographer Rod Mar won 2nd place for his Sports Portfolio. For Single Page News Story we took a Third and an Award of Excellence for our A-1 pages/pictures by Mike Siegel of the Boeing 787 roll out and our A-1 flood coverage, which showed I-5, closed down in Chehalis with pictures by Steve Ringman. These two awards deserve recognition across the newsroom because without help from Kris Higginson who worked both of these nights and page designers Rick Lund and Ted Basladynski this wouldn't have happened. Photographer Alan Berner won an Award of Excellence for a set of portraits. Art Director Carol Nakagawa won a 2nd place in the Magazine Feature Spread/Cover category with pictures by Alan Berner.

Society of News Design

The Seattle Times earned 10 Awards of Excellence in this contest which recognizes excellence in visual journalism. Nearly 15,000 entries were submitted from newspapers around the world. Special congratulations to artist Boo Davis and Asst. Art Director Susan Jouflas, whose illustration and design work account for 6 of the awards. Also winning were the "Pike Place at 100" special series, the "Climate Challenge" poster, our redesign of the Sunday Entertainment & Arts section and a selection of covers from our Sunday Bulldog edition.

Malofiej International Graphics Competition

Artist Gabi Campanario has won a coveted Silver Award for his full-page graphic, "Proposition 1: What You Pay, What You Get." Reporter Mike Lindblom provided story material and Asst. Art Director Whitney Stensrud was the graphics editor for this project.

Associated Press Sports Editors

The Seattle Times Sports has been selected a Top 10 daily section in its circulation category (100-250K) for the eighth straight year. The Times Sunday Sports section received Honorable Mention (Top 20).

National Education Writers Association

Reporter Linda Shaw earned a 1st place award in Beat Reporting. Her entries included stories on the U.S. Supreme Court ruling; the "unschooling" and standardized-curriculum movements; and the production of "Dreamgirls" at Rainier Beach High School.
